PETERSEN MEDIA- If it was not for bad luck, Jason Statler would have no luck at all it seems. Saturday night during the Howard Kaeding Classic, Statler found himself with nowhere to go on the 25th lap as cars wrecked in front of him, and damage from contact would knock him out of the race.
“I am still not to sure what happened,” Statler said. “I was in a group of about four or give cars going every which direction and all of the sudden the 22 car is upside down in front of me.”
Taking to the Ocean Speedway on Saturday night, the Grass Valley, CA pilot would get his DF Rios Motorsports/Amerikote/Riley Collins Auto Body No. 00 entry timed in fifth fastest amongst the 29 cars checked into the speedway.
An early start time brought on extremely slick track conditions much of the night, and during his heat race, Statler would finish in the third spot, and just miss out on earning a Dash berth, as he gridded the field from the fifth row for the feature event.
Following a brief break for track prep just prior to the 30-lap feature event, moisture was brought back to the surface, and the first half of the race was clicked off at a blistering pace as the track slowly blew off.
Running very strong inside the Top-10, Statler would battle with the likes of Shane Golobic, Craig Stidham, and Bud Kaeding as the race would see a few cautions lead to restarts late in the race.
Running in the eighth spot on the 25th lap, trouble would break out in front of him, and with nowhere to go, Statler would get collected with a tumbling Shane Golobic, and he would see his bid for a Top-10 finish come up short.
“We had a really good car all night long, and were running well in the feature, I thought, “ Statler said. “The guys did a great job, and unfortunately it was a wrong place, wrong time situation for us.”
